If you catch the writing bug, and you don't want to try your hand -- or trust your fate -- to one of the large publishing houses, then self publishing is the way to go.
If you do that, check out http://www.lulu.com.
If you don't have the writing bug, but you want to check out some independent authors, then you can buy from lulu as well.

It may sound silly. But there's science to back it up.
I was reminded of this when I saw an article I'd read a couple months ago. So check it out. (Hang in there through the first three or four paragaphs.)
Weapons of Mass Deception

Weapons of Mass Deception is a documentary by Danny Schechter (formerly of ABC News' 20/20) that explores the roles played by the the major American news outlets in their coverage of the Iraqi war.
It delves into the efforts by the current and past GOP administrations to contain the media "to prevent another Vietnam"... the roles of the organizations to disseminate -- unchallenged -- propaganda and disinformation provided by the White House... the
problems inherent in the current basic organization of the major media that prevent them from performing real journalism as opposed to play-by-play coverage... the entertain vs. inform clash... and more.

People are all familiar with the fact that a good many on the Left have compared Bush to Hitler. Even a German cabinet minister has done so. I *for one* refute that. Hitler knew exactly where Poland was.
Patent Abuse? amazon.com

(1) Amazon was awarded a patent today for Customer Reviews. The patent technically covers methods for obtaining reviews of products, INCLUDING LETTING USERS SUBMIT REVIEWS ON A WEB FORM.
(2) The ability to deliver in search results products spanning multiple categories. Example: search for Madonna, and you get Books, Videos, DVD's and CD's made by Madonna. (As apposed to saying "search in CD's for Madonna and getting back only her CD's.)
(3) "Purchase Circles" - I don't know this feature too well but it sounds a lot like the features you see in a lot of social networking sites.
SO.... should amazon be able to patent these?

Costco - The Anti-Wal-Mart

Check out the following from the NYTimes, it's interesting...
How Costco Became the Anti-Wal-Mart
By STEVEN GREENHOUSE
ISSAQUAH, Wash.
JIM SINEGAL, the chief executive of Costco Wholesale, the nation's fifth-largest retailer, had all the enthusiasm of an 8-year-old in a candy store as he tore open the container of one of his favorite new products: granola snack mix. "You got to try this; it's delicious," he said. "And just $9.99 for 38 ounces."
Some 60 feet away, inside Costco's cavernous warehouse store here in the company's hometown, Mr. Sinegal became positively exuberant about the 87-inch-long Natuzzi brown leather sofas. "This is just $799.99," he said. "It's terrific quality. Most other places you'd have to pay $1,500, even $2,000."

I'm curious: Where were you when you first heard the news? What memories do you have of that day?
