Weapons of Mass Deception is a documentary by Danny Schechter (formerly of ABC News' 20/20) that explores the roles played by the the major American news outlets in their coverage of the Iraqi war.
It delves into the efforts by the current and past GOP administrations to contain the media "to prevent another Vietnam"... the roles of the organizations to disseminate -- unchallenged -- propaganda and disinformation provided by the White House... the
problems inherent in the current basic organization of the major media that prevent them from performing real journalism as opposed to play-by-play coverage... the entertain vs. inform clash... and more.

Interesting show on NPR. From their description of the guest: "In his new book, Talking Right, linguist Geoff Nunberg examines the parlance of the American political right. Conservatives, Nunberg notes, have been remarkably effective at creating a language through which to convey their agenda."
How to kill the record labels? Or maybe not?

This is just stuff i think about. mySpace through its saturation and its little music widgets really threatens, i think, to turn the music world upside down.
Consider a partially hypothetical situation
MySpace offeres a "band page" for free to which you can upload songs for listening pleasure of a potential 50-million-plus audience.
For $5/mo you get unlimited uploads and the ability to sell your music downloads via myspace. You charge $1.00 -- more or less -- and myspace gets a 10-cent cut.
If you, the band, play the social networking game right, you may have a moneymaker here such that you don't need a record label for major success.

USA - one loss, the Czechs. That leaves Italy and Ghana. My prediction for the group: Italy (12pts), Czechs (9pts), USA (3pts), Ghana (0pts). So, not as good of a showing for the USA as in 2002, but this is one hell of a group to get stuck in for the first round. Too bad. They were looking good that year until the Germans kicked them in the head.
Speaking of whom... Germany's won their first. They'll advance, but how far?
I've been paying attention to the African teams. Judging by the standings, they're not a major force yet. But have you watched them play, especially outside of the WC? OI! Give them a few years, and we'll be saying "Brazil who?"
